Kyle Justin Health: What the Guitar Guy Has Been Up to Since Leaving AVGN

There’s something quietly impressive about someone who quits something they’re good at, not because they failed, but because something else was more important. Kyle Justin did that very thing. The man who wrote the theme song for Angry Video Game Nerd and played the lovably weird “Guitar Guy” who lived behind a couch quit everything in 2009. Not to avoid trouble. Not in the dramatic, public sense of being burned out. He left to get married and have kids.

That kind of choice can make someone less creative than they really are. Before the term “internet creator” was even a real job title, Kyle Justin had made a real niche for himself on the internet. He was a part of Cinemassacre’s growing world; he was in six episodes, wrote parody songs, played Spider-Man, did the voice of Cousin Itt, and made up whole musical numbers on the spot. Just the song “Where Did Their Hair Go?” from the Ikari Warriors episode showed that the musician could think of things quickly, be okay with being silly, and be surprisingly good at it.

After that, he backed off. The interesting thing is that looking back, that choice seems less like a retreat and more like becoming more self-aware. Hitting the pause button to spend more time with family is not a big news story. But this is the kind of move that shows someone knows what they really value, and being mentally and emotionally clear is a healthy thing in and of itself.

He didn’t just vanish, which also says something. Kyle stayed in touch with the work that was going on behind the scenes during those years. He put together sets. He made the craft better even tho he wasn’t in front of it. These were real contributions, but they were more quiet. The Sega Activator episode set, the fake wall for the Mega Man Games episode, and the complicated 13 Dead End Drive build for Board James. Doing good work without needing credit makes you feel good in a way.

Still, no one knows for sure what Kyle’s daily life was like during those years. There is something almost refreshing about the fact that he is not a public figure in a way that makes people want to look closely at him. These days, every creator records every part of their life for fans to see, but Kyle Justin just lived his. He took care of his family. He kept his skills up to date. He kept in touch with the business people who were important to him in his own way.

In the Beating Bubble Bobble episode from 2026, he made his first AVGN appearance since 2013. It didn’t feel like a comeback, but more like a visit from an old friend. The breakup lasted a long time—at least ten years—but the warmth around it made it seem like there wasn’t a real fight or other dramatic reason for the absence beside the one that was already said. Life took place. Family was the most important thing. Whenever it seemed right, he showed up again.

There is something important to notice about this. These days, stories about creator health are mostly about burnout, controversy, or big changes. That’s not how Kyle Justin’s story goes. His is a quieter story of a man who knew how much he could give to his career and his family at the same time and made a choice that most people think about for years without actually making.

Born in Kansas City, Sierra Foster writes about politics and serves as Senior Editor at kbsd6.com. She was raised paying attention to this city, not just living in it. Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
