Zuckerberg’s $300M Yacht Was Right There — And Did Nothing While a Boat Ran Out of Fuel in Alaska

The picture looks almost like it came from a movie: a 387-foot superyacht, said to be worth $300 million, floating calmly in the water off Southeast Alaska, while a small 21-foot skiff was stuck somewhere between Petersburg and Juneau, running out of fuel and waiting for someone to answer a radio call. The ship that finally showed up wasn’t the biggest one nearby. The Wilderness Legacy, a UnCruise Adventures ship, was a small one.

Michael Love, a software developer from New York City, was a passenger who wrote about it on Bluesky. The story quickly spread. Love says that the captain of the Wilderness Legacy told the passengers that Mark Zuckerberg’s yacht, Launchpad, had been closer to the stranded skiff but hadn’t come to help when they called. Love wrote that almost all of the passengers responded by booing.

Tracking data from ships seems to back up the main idea of the story. The Launchpad slowed down outside of Farragut Bay while the Wilderness Legacy sped past it. It then stopped near the skiff and towed it to safety. The crew of the skiff showed up the next morning to say they had made it back to Petersburg safely. Something small and clean, except for the part that everyone kept talking about.

Later, Zuckerberg’s spokesperson made it clear that the CEO of Meta and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were not on the Launchpad at the time. The crew had been using a different radio channel, and by the time they checked the Coast Guard contact, the rescue was already under way, according to the statement. That makes sense, and the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that this wasn’t a formal call for help, just a general request. In that sense, no laws were broken. There were no breaches of maritime obligations.

However. What is technically needed and what feels right don’t always match up. This is especially true when you’re on a nine-figure ship and someone nearby is stuck at sea. Love made it clear: he would have jumped at the chance if he were Zuckerberg. A quick and clear way to help. Good looks and real effect. There’s no hard math here.

Because of the time and place, the incident had a different effect. In the past few years, Zuckerberg has had to deal with a complicated public image. The shift to AI, the apparent change in politics, and the general feeling that he works in a world that most people can’t fully access or understand have all made it harder for him. The fact that a $300 million yacht was parked in Alaskan waters for most of the summer is already clear to everyone. It wasn’t hard to understand what a Juneau Reddit user meant when they called it a “excessive eyesore.”

What makes this story interesting isn’t really who is at fault in the law. It’s about how we see things, and how we see things has its own logic. Dan Blanchard, the owner of the UnCruise, said that giving aid in those waters happens so often that it doesn’t always catch his attention. That is something to think about for a while. There were no changes made to the crew’s schedule for this nite. Everyday. This is what you do when you’re out there and someone needs your help.

It’s still not clear what went wrong with communication on the Launchpad that nite. Statistics and posts on social media sites don’t always show that things are as simple as they seem. However, the picture is clear: a big, pricey ship keeping quiet while a smaller one does the work. Up in Alaska. In the summer. With people on board watching and booing into the nite.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
